Background of the Study
Oral traditions have long served as the backbone of communal history in Ijebu Ode, transmitting cultural values, historical narratives, and indigenous knowledge across generations. These traditions, which encompass storytelling, folklore, songs, and proverbs, are vital for maintaining a collective memory that defines community identity (Ajayi, 2023). In an era dominated by written records and digital media, the resilience of oral traditions remains significant as they adapt to contemporary challenges while preserving ancient wisdom (Ogunleye, 2024). However, modernization and external cultural influences have begun to erode these practices, leading to concerns about the loss of indigenous historical narratives. This study explores the extent to which oral traditions continue to serve as reliable repositories of communal history in Ijebu Ode, and how they contribute to cultural continuity and social cohesion. By critically assessing current practices and community engagement in oral history, the research aims to highlight the potential for revitalizing these traditions as a dynamic component of cultural heritage (Babatunde, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
The erosion of oral traditions in Ijebu Ode poses a threat to the preservation of communal history. With increasing modernization and the proliferation of digital media, traditional methods of knowledge transmission are at risk of being sidelined, resulting in a loss of historical narratives and cultural identity. The absence of systematic documentation and support for oral practices further exacerbates this problem. This study aims to address these challenges by evaluating the current state of oral traditions and their role in preserving communal history (Babatunde, 2025).
